In choosing to move the complaint process against Rev. Mike Tupper forward for presiding at a same-sex wedding, Michigan Area Bishop Deborah Lieder Kiesey communicates clearly to all who would listen that she is not a friend of LGBTQ persons.

A great injustice is being committed and we must be able to say who bears the responsibility.

Every time a bishop punishes a clergyperson for presiding over the wedding of a same-sex couple, it is as if they have raised a megaphone into the air and announced at great volume to LGBTQ persons:  “you are incompatible with Christian teaching.”

One cannot claim to be a friend of the queer people of God (and their allies) while implementing anti-queer theology and policy.  If you are a bishop in The UMC and you refuse to use your episcopal privilege to stand with queer folk, you are working against us, against Christ, and against the well-being of Christ’s holy church.
