Strategize about what people and churches need for this work.\nIdentify ambassadors for LGBTQIA+ justice and advocacy (as RMN names them)\nAddress issues facing us now like ongoing prejudice and the many hateful laws restricting gender affirming care.\nStrategize to take action against violence inflicted on members of the community\,\, especially transgender folk\nAddress issues of mental health as relates to homophobic Christian teachings and societal attitudes and seek to reduce high suicide rates (ie mental health )\nEmbrace Queer folk who because of cultural structural context (color) may still feel a need  to be closeted\n\nChrist calls us to welcome all\, especially those on the margins\, and creates inclusive communities based on love and justice. Intersectionality is key in our commitment to be reconciling; we seek justice in all communities. \nOur United Methodist church has been an important center for spiritual convocations for over 100 years (see our history\, below). We are member of the Northern Illinois Conference\,  a diverse UM Conference\, rural and urban\, with 54 Reconciling Ministry Network (RMN) congregations plus 4 RMN Communities and  5 campus ministries.   While our congregation is one of many Reconciling and welcoming congregations in Evanston\, we were one of the early members of the RMN fellowship since its inception. LGBTQIA+ persons are in all of our United Methodist  communities representing many identities including:  nationalities\, races\, backgrounds\, languages\, educational attainment\, economic conditions\, abilities\, genders and sexual orientations.

Michael Morgan English Bible & Psalmody Collection\, this annual event brings together biblical scholars\, translators\, collectors\, and the general public to consider the impact of the Bible on the church and culture and to learn from one of the world’s premier collections of English Bibles. \n“When Translation Really Matters: Momentous Decisions in the History of the English Bible”\nThis year’s Morgan Forum highlights the significance of translation choices. When faced with the hundreds of English Bible translations available\, some may ask\, “Does it really matter which one I choose?” This event seeks to answer that question with a strong affirmative by exploring some major decisions made by translators over the five centuries of English Bibles documented by the Morgan Collection. The centerpiece of the event is a screening of the critically acclaimed 2022 documentary 1946: The Mistranslation that Shifted Culture\, followed by a panel discussion with the filmmaker\, local church leaders\, and faculty from Candler and Columbia Theological Seminary. We aim to remind our elected representatives that government of\, by\, and for the people must be responsive to the people. \n“Imagine what a showing from faith-based groups would demonstrate to both the LGBTQ+ community and those who would condemn us. Please join us. \n“At present\, our application to demonstrate on State Capitol grounds has been approved. We encourage groups to organize their own transportation to Tallahassee as we do not currently have any significant pool of funds – this is a grassroots initiative. SUMMARY:Service of Repentance (by Washington Street UMC in Columbia\, SC)
DESCRIPTION:Washington Street United Methodist Church (WSUMC) will be holding a Service of Repentance and Healing For the Harm Inflicted on LGBTQIA+ persons on Thursday\, October 13 at 6:00 pm at WSUMC in its historic sanctuary. The service will coincide with Pride Festival weekend which will be taking place in downtown Columbia on Oct. 14-15. Individuals from Reformation Lutheran Church will be participating in the service with testimonials on the topic. This is sure to be a very meaningful and spiritual experience for LBGTQIA+ individuals and their allies in the Columbia area. \nRecognizing that if we do not acknowledge the sins of the harm done to our LBGTQIA+ siblings in Christ in both our past and present\, individually and systemically\, we cannot hope to understand and heal the wounds of hateful comments and actions. The service will include elements of confession and repentance\, and the repudiation of the times when churches have been silent in the face of the harm caused by the church to LBGTQIA+ persons. \nRecently\, as a response to issues of safety and welcome raised by members of the LGBTQAI+ community through dialogues at WSUMC\, the church has created a new location for a Sunday morning fellowship – the S.A.F.E. Space. Open from 9:45 to 10:45 am and hosted by LGBTQAI+ members of WSUMC\, and other allies\, the SAFE Space is located just inside of the Bull Street entrance of the church. There will be access to view the 11:00 am service from the room if anyone is interested. All are truly welcome here.
